That's Not What I Said

Yes, it's that weekend! The 48 hour film challenge. And well, here is the news with 8 hours still left to go...

On Friday we met at this little tiny bar called the Ice House, which is a hole in the wall that sits at Ice level of a ice hockey rink. I suspect parents can hide in there during their kids practices. In any case, there were 24 teams participating in the contest here at the local level. We all drew a Genre and were given three things that we had to put into the script. The three things that everyone has to have in their script/movie somewhere are:

1. Prop: Bandage
2. Line: That's not what I said.
3. Character: Charles or Charlene Brennan, Dog Walker

The guys picked me to do the drawing so they wouldn't regret what was picked. We didn't want Musical Western and it would be my fault if we picked it. Thank God I didn't pick that, but we got Super Hero instead. I was horrified! But by the time we left the bar, the guys were already spinning stories.

I drove back to the studio so all the guys could start the hour of spinning ideas before choosing one that we would go with. There was lots of giggling to be had on the drive home, but the one that got the most laughter was the thought of a Super Hero with Tourette's Syndrome. So, by the time we made it back to the office they had pretty much picked Tourette's Man as our hero. We spent the evening talking it out and discussing costumes, props and actors OH MY! And finally at 11pm all actors and crew were called and on board and what I could do for my part was done.

I'm playing the part of producer. In other words...the big organizer and biggest grunt around too. Hubs was head script writer and Director. Scott helped write/correct the script and then was the Assistant Director. And Mike, he's our editor and technical guy, meaning he could do camera, lighting, sound whatever.

I don't really work well w/out sleep, but Hubs loves late nights...so I think we chose the right jobs. I got to bed by Midnight on Friday and again on Saturday.

They finished the script around 2:30am and we started on Saturday at 6:30 or at least Scott, Mike and I did. Hubs was able to get in by 8. My morning consisted of making sure we had food, scripts and a cat. We couldn't get costumes until 10am (due to the store opening times), so I had until then to get my $hit together and on the right track. Hubs worked with the actors on run through while the crew started setting up for shooting.

I guess you'd like to hear the story... T Man and his sidekick Biff are considered the bottom of the barrel of super heroes. They are part of an agency which manages super heros. So, we start at the agency where an old lady calls in that her cat is stuck in a tree. Seeing that Superman, Batman and Spiderman are otherwise tied up the only SH's left are T Man and Biff, Leopard lady and Bat Boy - think baseball. So, the receptionist goes into the waiting room to tell her boss who's there and Biff ends up begging for them to go. Also, Charlene Brennan is in the room with Mighty Dog. Mighty Dog is played by our own Casey! And she even has a line - the Visual Effects people are working on making her talk as we speak!!! I have to say it's a bit weird to see your dog talk! Back to the story - So, T man and Biff get the job to get the cat out of the tree - and they end up pulling it off, but this is by far the funniest part of the short. You'll see a picture of Hubs crying and laughing while they were editing last night as the old lady is actually upstaging our heroes! At one point there is mention of super powers and she says Oh My what are your super powers and looks directly at both crotches. And there were many other takes where both she and the super heros are just hysterical!

So, I think it's come out better than I thought when I initially drew the genre of Super Hero. I will get to see the rough cut in about an hour. Hubs came home around 4:30 this morning. That was almost 24 hours of being up for him.

I think the best part for me so far has been that Casey was able to be in it and even cooler that she gets a talking part. Everyone loved her on set yesterday! I know Hubs is having a grand old time, even if he's not ready for me to oust him out of bed to go finish this up. I still have some paperwork to do. And I had some stories from yesterday, but can't seem to think of them right now, so I'll just turn it over to the slide show of pictures now...
