More Alaska photos

Ok, well, I had enough time today to post some pictures of Alaska on my website....it's most of them...so, if you have some time to kill, then meander on over to:

Artsy ones, Snapshots

I've been busy getting stuff together for the launch of our greeting card launch on October 3rd at a trade show in Chicago.

S

Alaska 2008

We're back!!!! And I've been swamped for the past five days!
Here is the view from our cabin. I'm going to put the rest of the pictures under the cut because I think they are big...
Watching NCIS....more narrative soon....

Alaska was a very nice break from the heat of Arizona. It was not so cold and the rain stopped just for us I think. The locals had mentioned that it had rained most of the summer, very few dry days, but we had mostly dry days. I did some video that I still have to download that has a tour of our cabin, since I didn't think to take any pictures of the inside of the cabin.

The cabin was beautiful and bigger than most and it even came with a thinking chair! Someone carved a seat with arm rests out of one of the huge tree trunks. The view above is from that seat.

G and I relaxing....

Our home for the week

Creek that I almost submerged my camera in.

King of the wilderness...

Quiet morning...

G

4 1/2 more days...

...until Alaska.... ;)

Last night G and I did an evening of prep for Alaska - we sat out on the porch and had a drink and tested cigars for Alaska. Normally G doesn't smoke - but in AK, it's both a guy thing and it keeps the no-see-um's away. This year our testing extended into the drinks because we have a nice liquor cabinet up in AK, but of course, no ice maker....so we have to ice pick the block ice to have ice for our drinks. Well, apparently our ice maker isn't producing ice, so we had to chop up a block of ice last night to have it for our drinks....

Between this and all the storms, we are prepped and ready!

S

Dog Day Afternoon

Well - in the midst of prepping for the Alaska trip, I finally got of my lazy a$$ and groomed the doggies. I was going to bath them too, but I think that will have to wait for tomorrow as we are having dinner w/a friend tonight.

Anyway, when I finally got to Emma:

She's the one on the right in this picture....

I remembered a picture that her 'grandma' had sent of her Mom, Tessie's, hock hair. (For those of you who don't know what a hock is = back leg hair) She measured Tessie's hock hair at 3 inches long. Well, I'm "proud" to say that Em is not far behind, she's got 2.5 in of hock hair!

and no, I didn't cut it off, it's still growing! She hasn't tripped over it yet...

So, there you go....that was the exciting thing of the afternoon...

s

Alaska....the details

I do this every year, I get really, really, really excited about Alaska! So, I'm going to share where we are going with ya'll and Gary will be able to stop saying...I know dear, soon, soon. If I'm really spunky and have time (which I'm short on, but love to procasinate) I might pull the video of the Petersburg Airport from the last year.

Anyway, we are going to be flying into Petersburg, Alaska and spending the night before we take the float plane out to our cabin.

(this is where our cabin is in Alaska)

When we get there we stay in a little hotel and there are only two-ish restaurants in town. So, we'll order the pizza from the delivery place above the bar and they'll deliver it to the bar! Then we'll do all of our grocery shopping for the week for 5 people - it's kinda embarrasing because by the time we check out we've got two baskets and then the checker calls over two baggers to pack us into our coolers and boxes. Then we meet up with our friends who are arriving that day and fly out to the cabin in the float plane.

Here's our cabin:

This looks HUGE in comparison to some of our others we've been to! I'm anxious to see if it is really big or is just the picture. Normally the cabin we stay in is an A-Frame cabin, which is quite small. Now, according to the website these are the amenities:

1 single plywood bunk

1 double plywood bunk

Sleeping loft

Table and benches

Wood stove

Cooking counter, shelves, cupboard space

Broom

Outhouse toilet

Maul , axe, splitting wedge

14' aluminum skiff with oars (flotation devices not provided)

The weather is supposed to be:

So, you'll see the one room airport, us waiting, then the view from the front of the airport... :)

In other news, we had a huge lightening storm last night! 10,000 strikes in an hour. It included hail and winds so high that it made the rain sheet and I couldn't see the neighbors house across the street! On our walk this morning, there was a tree down in the street, it completely uprooted and fell through a fence wall! We only had a huge branch from the neighbor's tree in our pool and no damage to my car that was sitting outside.

Ok...off to a meeting...

s

Same old, Same ol'

Well, I've been thinking about doing a blog entry for awhile, does that count? I read Joe Mallozzi's blog every day and he always seems to have something to say or a video. But, alas here, it's be the same ol' stuff for me...work stuff. And for some strange reason, I feel like I've been on the phone all day everyday. This seems to be the week for people to call me, I even ran my battery out of my phone. Oh well.

I'd love to do the video stuff, because I'd have a ton of fun doing it, but I really need a new camera to be able to do it effectively.

Oh well, anyway - We are mostly packed and ready for our Alaska vacation and I can't wait to go! Going from 100 degree weather to 40-50 degree weather with rain will be soooooo much fun! No, we don't take a cruise, we go to the "outback" of Alaska. We rent a forest service cabin and have to take everything in that we use. There is no running water and we are gone for 7 days. It's the most wonderful and relaxing trip. Don't get me wrong, I love my 5 star hotel vacations, but this one, you get away from everything. Anything that's bothering you, you can't do a thing about and no one can reach you to bug you about it because ther are no phones or computers. I'll admit I do have computer withdrawal, but I'll have something to talk about when I get back!!! ;)

Here's G and I in Alaska 2 years ago:

So, anyway, I think we'll run over to Cabela's today and get Gary's fishing rods and any last minute items before the Labor day crowds this weekend.

I guess that's where my brain is at.....scattered with all the stuff I'm trying to get done before I leave - cards printed, agility lesson plans finalized, fund raiser responsibilities taken care of, etc...all the while dreaming of cooler weather and beautiful scenery!

S

Interesting week...

Well, it's been an interesting week here at the ranch....

My poor Aunt called to check in and she got the laundry list, which included, a friend diagnosed with Cancer, one that was in hospice due to her Cancer, we had to put down the horse that G rescued on Monday due to illness, and then our friend in hospice died on Monday at age of 55. And other assorted sundries that have been happening. So, I would classify it as a stressful little week that I would like to leave behind.

So, in my effort to do so, I stumbled across this:

I've been a Trekkie since I was little. It's what brought me into Sci Fi. Let me clarify - old Trek. That was the one I liked and followed. I did get into Next Generation for awhile, but then went to college and lost track. I hate DS9, but Voyager is entertaining. And Enterprise, it had potential, but lost it's way.

So, I knew Zachary Quinto was going to be Spock and I thought he was a good choice, but MAN - look at just how GOOD of a choice he is. (I've already made my Mom roll her eyes if she's reading this. I used to torture her with lines from ST and make her guess which ep or movie and there are many pictures of me with my Spock ears hat on, which I 'm sure she wanted to tear off my head many times)

Anyway....that's my stunning revelations about life today... stay tuned... ;)

P.S. I did watch Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog this week....it was a HOOT! Very weird and twisted, but very humorous...what I expect from Joss Whedon... ;)

Been to TX....

We ran off to Texas to visit my Mom and Mimi for a week. We had a great time with them and I KNOW they loved it! We did the typical TX thing, eat and eat and shop and eat. Gwen and David kicked off our visit by bringing by some rice krispy treats and pumpkin cookies with lemon icing. And they closed our trip by bringing by wonderful brownies and home home made jelly and red pepper relish. Mimi capped off every meal with an offer of Blue Bell Ice Cream and you just can't refuse her. I'm sure I gained a couple of pounds, I was full the entire time!

Actually, Mom wanted to go to the East Texas Oil Museum and it was interesting. I was ticked that I forgot my camera, so no pics of the oil derricks, just this link to the website. The thing I found most interesting was that one of the big oil men got a loan from a woman to drill for the oil that made him rich, and that was back in the late 20's.

There are two places we have to go eat when we go to Longview. One is Mom and Mimi's favorite Mexican restaurant, the Jalapeno Tree. The other is Gary's favorite Cajun place, Dudley's. For him, they have the most outrageous gumbo. But they start you out with coleslaw (pictured above). I don't normally like 'slaw, but this is sweet, so, I eat it. We had a wonderful crab stuffed shrimp appetizer before I dove into my red beans and rice:

Here's G:

Note the Mardi Gras decoration in the background...

Mimi and Mom waiting to order.

Then we had our honey do's, such as making a computer run faster, changing out a shower head, fixing a wheel on the scooter, polishing the silver and spray painting the wicker furniture. We took a trip off to G's favorite store, Home Depot, and came away with a new shower head for Mimi's bathroom and Sage Green spray paint. G took the more manly of the jobs and i think he got the better end of the deal - he had the shower head installed within 5 minutes. Mom and I headed out in the heat of the morning to spray paint:

Now, spray painting just ain't all that hard...but after you've done three pieces of furniture and two tables, your spray finger is stuck in that position. Dare I even admit that my arm was sore the next day, just in the tendon that came from the finger! LOL.

After I finished the wicker, Mom looked around and said, why don't you just do those two accent tables too. So, they were small and I grabbed them and off I went. Mimi asked if the paint I had was still the right paint. So, I looked at the can, knowing it was the right stuff, but read "For Metal, wood, wicker and other things" and Mom, we are not going to explore "other things" today! :)

Mom and I also went shopping, which we love and found a great sale in which I got Ralph Lauren shorts for $14.00! G got in some much needed rest while we were gone.

And then we went back to one of the smallest airports ever:

The one terminal Longview airport. It's really the only one that you can be greeted at the gate and Mimi always stands where I can see her from outside the terminal by the plane. I miss being greeted at the gate, that's just so cool. The only other airport as small as Longview, is the one in Petersburg, Alaska where we will be going next month! It doesn't have a restaurant like Longview's does.

So, after a nice visit, which was much too short, we headed back to our dogs and the non-humid heat of Arizona!

Weekend

Well, it was a good weekend, seems that it was busy...

Friends of ours gave us tickets to see the Diamondback vs Dodgers (baseball) game. We love to go to baseball games, but we so forget that until someone offers us tickets. Apparently it was 70's night so the ballpark was full of 70's music and all the employees were dressed in the big lapel jackets, big hair and big glasses, long socks and headbands. It was fun to watch and on the player pictures that were on the big screen, the put afros that were huge or the Elvis glasses. It was also bobble head night too...we got the manager bobble head...

We sat in front of a party of guys who were on a "guys night out" so they were being very obnoxious. F-ing this and F-ing that. Too much testosterone. Which I wouldn't have minded if they were say 3 or 4 rows back. Anyway, we made it through the first inning with those guys until the people who were in the seats next to them showed up. It was a young couple with a 3 week old little girl. As soon as they sat the newborn's carrier down in between them and the guys, those guys toned it way down. it was just tooooo funny! I just can't imagine bringing your newborn to a baseball game. She was very good. So, on the one hand, that would be one tough night as their first night out as parents. But on the up side, the kid will sleep through anything now, with all that noise!

We had a great time cheering, singing and drinking beer and having hot dogs and cotton candy. I took video on my phone, just for the heck of it. When the program blows it up bigger you can't see as much...or tell what it is...but you can see G and I in there a couple times...so if you're bored, check it out...and I just picked a song...so it may be good or totally un related...as the photobucket songs are limited...

<lj-embed id="16" />
So, On Sunday the dogs swam and had a ball, then got a bath.

G bought another flower

Our A/C stopped working, but G got on the roof and fixed it!

After that we went to our friend's house to have the secret family recipe Lasagna and some brownies and catch up.

But when we came home the A/C had stopped working again, so here I sit, with two fans, one for me and one for the dogs waiting for the call back from our A/C guy....wonder how hot it's going to be today?

No Anakind, I'm not talking politics...I seldom do... :)

I'm talking about our front yard stuff. We were at Home Depot the other day and G wanted some Hibiscus for the front, so here they are:

For his birthday he wanted flowers for the pots and for in between the boxwoods:

You can see the one in the middle is flowering, but the two on either side, don't seem to want to do much. OH, and he bought bogenville for the pots. When he bought it, they had flowers...now, due to no water or too much heat, they have fallen off.

And the other side of the garage:

So, there you go...
S

Lure 4 a Cure
Well, we had a very fun time after we got the Lure Course set up. It took a grueling 3 hours to set up, mostly because we only had two other people helping us part of the time, and G was very tired at this point. We'd stayed at a hotel we always like usually, but this particular room was not good and after the previous day, we needed comfort and didn't get it. G actually did get up at 5:30 a.m. so that we could get to the park on time.

The day was gorgeous! It was so nice to get out of the heat! The dogs had a blast. Emma just loves her Lure Course and she got to test it out and then she got to run it several more times when we needed to garner some crowd interest. The dogs that were running it were very fun to watch. Here's what I wrote for our Foundation website:

The park was beautiful and all the rescues were out and several people came out to enjoy the weather. Watching the Lure Coursing dogs is always entertaining. Each one approaches the course differently. Some of them are pros and their focus is unbreakable.

Then you have the first timers who have no idea what a tire is and gingerly make their way through the first run.

Large and small dogs both enjoy the course

Most dogs enjoy the chase, but the chosen few just don’t get it and they like the scenery better.

All on a quest to catch this:

Emma was so focused on one run that she ended up doing a face plant at the very end trying to get to the lure. She'd figured out where it goes after the end of the course and tried to cut it short and ended up in the fencing. I wished I had had my camera because it would have been like those pictures you see of football players going upside down and just crashing. And of course that didn't phase her at all, she still loves the course! She loved it so much this weekend, that she broke out of her crate to get to it. So, I've got to figure out a new strategy when she gets to do this again.

Alas, at 12:30 or so the monsoon came a blowin' and by 1pm the rain had started to rain us out. And it rained and rained and rained. So, we began to pack up our stuff and haul it back to the truck. We had on our rain gear, but by the time we had pulled out the last stake from the course and headed out, we were soaked to the bone. Thankfully we had some dry t-shirts from ABCR to change into. G and I were just worn out from the whole trip. Even though we had some delightful help that ABCR rounded up for us, we did most of the work. So, afterwards, before heading home, we sat down and enjoyed a nice steak and felt like we did a good job, and we did, we raised $755 from that one little event. Then we headed down the mountain, truck filled to the brim with soaking wet everything.

We were too tired to take any of it out when we got home, but at least we rolled down the windows to help it dry a little. Now, it's Sunday and we are both still tired, but the dogs are ready to go. We managed to drag everything out of the truck into the sun to dry. G did most of the work in putting it all away once it dried. That was hard work too, but I chose to do some stuff with the pictures and have just sat around talking on the phone or playing on my computer a bit, trying to become a bit less tired and sore. I must be THAT out of shape...geez...

But I still had a great time and I look forward to next year!

Here are some other fun pictures from the day:

<lj-embed id="14" /><a href="http://img.photobucket.com/redirect/album?action=slideshow&landing=/slideshows&type=112"
Stuck on 17

We finally left for Flag at almost 5pm. When everyone else is ready to go too. How smart are we. Anyway, about ¼ of the way up, just past Black Canyon City we started to hit traffic. The kind that you move at less than 5mph. We got off and managed to jump ahead by going on the business route for awhile, but when it was time to get back on, with in 5 minutes we hit the parking lot. And there we stayed from 5:45 to 8:15pm.

It reminded me of that episode of Dead Zone where Johnny was stuck on the freeway trying to figure out who was going to die. I managed to pull out my laptop and work on the calendar some more, as I’m woefully behind what I promised C that I would do.

Then I got bored and curious, plus the dogs were getting hungry. So, I fed the dogs and G started to wander around, taking them for walks. People were out of their cars and visiting and some were walking up to see what they could see. There was a group of guys who were playing their music loud, as they were going to Vegas for the weekend. The ladies next to us were from Cottonwood and had gone down for a post surgery check up and were now faced with a worse case scenario of sitting there. But they loved dogs and we got to talking about dogs for while.

I did get a chance to take some pictures and G got his exercise in as he went running up the hill to see how far it went.

After night had fallen, he came running back, with all these other people. Now I felt like I was in Independence Day or Deep Impact when people were all running from the danger. And when we got moving, we didn’t have any of this slow moving stuff, we actually were able to get up to the speed limit within 10 minutes. So, I suspect we will reach Flag at 10pm and then we have to get up and set this all up at 6 a.m.

This is on the hill I climbed looking back toward town. Can you see the lights of the cars way, way far back!

My artistic pic of the day

Looking forward and back...

Now, from the top of the hill:

See the cars all the way up there between the mtns....look in the middle of the picture

Looking back at town

This is the view from our roadside

Phone Company Rant

Today was the day we needed to pack up ye old lure course for the Foundation and head up to Flagstaff for the Rescue Round up. I was looking forward to a nice cool break from the oppressive heat. I thought we could make a nice little get away of it.

So, I got up as normal and went through my routine and started to make the list for packing and all that. G wouldn’t be up for awhile…oh wait, here he comes in to swear at the computer because it’s not trading because the Internet is down. So, I was instructed to find out why the Internet was down before he lost his mind, as what was happening in the market was going on right now. Obviously, his morning didn’t start out right.

I proceed to get on the phone with Qwest. I HATE talking to the phone company, especially when I don’t have a phone with them. As I found out, that just makes it harder for them to find out who I am. You see, I have Internet with them, I have an account number. I started out in phone hell because the automated attendant HAS to have a phone number. Then I get to the first guy – I was upset at being in phone hell and not having internet, and it’s been all of 5 minutes. He is at a loss with me when I tell him I don’t have a phone number just an account number, look it up that way. He puts me on “hold”, which means in his language, I’m hanging up on you.

Yes, I call back to phone hell and get a nice young lady who apparently tries really hard but either hasn’t been trained effectively or her support staff can’t help her figure out I don’t have a BTN (that’s phone company for Billing Telephone Number), I have an account number. It takes her 45 minutes, count ‘em 45 minutes to figure out that big ol’ long account numbers mean that I have an INTERNET account, like I said up front – “I want to speak to Internet tech support to see if there is an outage.”

I get transferred to “R” at the billing office (we’ll protect his name) for the Internet and I ask if there is an outage and he wants to confirm my account info…which the girl had already told him. I found myself spelling my name and getting aggravated at 51 minutes into the call. I asked if he was tech support and indeed no, he’s billing. I ask several other questions about how to get here w/o going through my previous hell to which his answer of course is “I don’t know, I don’t have any other numbers for you.” BULLSHIT!

I finally accept the transfer to tech support and here’s a guy who knows something! And Voila, just as I’ve told him my problem I check to see if I’m still down and nope, the Internet is fixed! So, I ask him how I can get here directly next time and he gives me a number straight off. He also is able to give me a customer advocacy line too. So, at 1 hour and 15 minutes into the call, I say thank you, good bye!

Did I mention that I HATE Qwest. We’ve had several run in’s over the years. Most notable being that when they would enter the building where our office was to install a new line, we’d follow them and watch them do it because more than once they’d pulled our lines off. Did I mention we were doing live talk radio?

So, I spent another ½ hour on the phone with a delightful lady that allowed me to bitch at her about how inadequate they were today. She even took care of another problem I’d been having, trying to get a credit off another account.

I guess you could say that my day started off wonderfully too. So much so, I had to write that because I was actually sitting down here to tell you what happened on the way to Flagstaff. I think I’ll put that in the next entry and give you break.

But before I leave you, I should say that I spent my morning doing the ABCR calendar while G recovered from spending all night up. Did I mention we were going to Flagstaff? We were finally packed to leave 4:50pm.

You know you're dog people when...

The dog rides shotgun and your husband sits in the back seat.

LOL - Yesterday was our last day with Leg-O the three legged dog we've been looking after for a friend of ours. So, we decided we would take her out to lunch, but first, we had to run some errands. We all loaded into the truck for the first stop at the bank where we would drop G. I'm driving, G is shotgun and Lego is in the back on her bed. So, after dropping G off, L and I are off to get water. While I'm inside getting the water, Lego has decided to relocate to the front seat. She is looking at me quite matter of factly and saying, NO, I'm not moving to the back seat right now. So, I get in and back to pick up G. I was planning to put her back on her bed while we were waiting for G in the parking lot, however I never got the chance. There is G standing on the curb waiting to be picked up, trying to be nice so I can avoid the construction.

So, he looks into the window and it registers on his face that Lego is in his seat. Again, Lego looks him directly in the eye and seems to say "the back seat's all yours, I'm comfortable." So, he quickly responds by getting into the back seat! Lego looked very satisfied. So, we were off to get her favorite lunch, Chick Fil A. She's a nugget and waffle fry girl. We all sat in our respective places and had a great lunch. Lego was very well behaved, she polietly waited for her servings.

I took video of the whole thing...

<lj-embed id="13" />
